Why You'll Love This Recipe
You only need 5 simple ingredients and 5 minutes to make this healthy chocolate frosting!
It's surprisingly delicious and perfect for using in place of traditional frosting. It can even be added into a piping bag to create beautiful cake decorations!
Instead of using butter as the base, this recipe uses avocado to create a thick and creamy texture. I love sneaking avocado into my dairy-free recipes because it's nutrient dense and full of healthy fat.
🍴Ingredient Notes
- Ripe Avocado - Since avocado is the main ingredient in this recipe, it must be ripe for best results. You'll need 1-2 avocados for this recipe depending on their size.
- Coconut Sugar - You can swap for any granulated sugar. For a sugar-free sweetener, try using Lakanto Golden Monkfruit.
- Cacao Powder - For a rich, dark chocolate flavor, I like adding in raw cacao powder! It's also loaded with vitamins and minerals like magnesium. Unsweetened cocoa powder will work too.
- Vanilla Extract - I love adding vanilla extract into to my chocolate desserts to round out the flavor.
- Salt - To enhance all the flavors, you'll need a pinch of salt!
Avocado Tips
It's best to use avocado that is at its peak ripeness! The consistency of the avocado will make or break this recipe. It should be soft when you give the outside a gentle squeeze and the inside should be a vibrant green color.
Here's how to make sure it's not an underripe avocado or an overripe avocado.
Underripe
If it's underripe, it will be very firm and hard to cut into. If you leave it on the counter, it should be ready within 24-48 hours!
Overripe
If it's overripe, it will be extremely soft, have a dull green color, brown spots, and a stringy texture.
🍴Step by Step Instructions
Step 1: Add Ingredients into Food Processor
Start by adding all ingredients into a food processor.
Step 2: Blend Frosting Ingredients
Blend for about 2 minutes, scraping down the edges as needed. It should be a smooth and shiny texture.
Expert Tips
- Blend the frosting in a food processor or high-speed blender for the creamiest results. You could also try a hand mixer, but it might not come out as smooth.
- Before you add to a piping bag, refrigerate for about 30 minutes to allow the frosting to firm up.
- When measuring the avocado, use a knife to cut the avocado flesh into small cubes. Add the cubes into the measuring cup for the most accurate results.
- You'll know it's the right consistency when it's buttery soft and it's a shiny brown color.
