Why You'll Love This Recipe
Sweet potato brownies are healthy and delicious way to satisfy your chocolate cravings! They're rich, fudgy, and made with only FOUR ingredients.
I've been making brownies with this secret ingredient for many years because it's a great way to create a fudgy texture without the need for butter or coconut oil.
And your family will never know that you included a vegetable!
Healthy
Unlike traditional brownies, these flourless brownies are made with nutrient dense ingredients like sweet potato, eggs, and cacao powder! I also used my favorite unrefined sweetener, coconut sugar.
Allergy Friendly
These healthy brownies are great for anyone with food allergies! Because this recipe is made with only 4 simple ingredients, it's naturally gluten-free, dairy-free, and Paleo friendly.
A lot of flourless brownie recipes are made with almond butter or peanut butter, but I created a completely nut-free recipe! (And I promise they're still super thick and fudgy!)
Easy
If you're looking for a sweet treat that doesn't require much effort, this recipe is for you! All you need is one bowl, a baking pan, and a whisk or hand mixer.
Great for beginner bakers, kids, or busy parents!
🍴Ingredient Notes
- Sweet Potato Puree - I suggest baking the sweet potatoes and blending them with a hand mixer to get a super smooth and creamy puree.
- Coconut Sugar - You can swap for any granulated sugar. For a sugar-free sweetener, try using Lakanto Golden Monkfruit.
- Cacao Powder - To give these brownies a rich, chocolate flavor, you'll need raw cacao powder or cocoa powder.
- Eggs - You'll need two eggs to help bind these brownies together and give them a lighter texture.
- Chocolate Chips - This is optional, but I love adding chocolate chips on top!
Recipe Variations
- Add extra chocolate chips into the brownie batter for even more chocolate flavor!
- Fold in walnuts or almonds for a little crunch.
- For a boost of flavor, add in 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract and ¼ teaspoon of salt.
- To balance out the chocolate flavor, spread your favorite dairy-free vanilla frosting or coconut whipped cream on top.
- For an even more decadent treat, serve with a scoop of dairy-free vanilla ice cream.
- Add a swirl of nut butter on top before baking.
🍴Step by Step Instructions
Step 1: Add Ingredients into Bowl
Start by mashed sweet potato, eggs, cacao powder, and coconut sugar into a large mixing bowl.
Step 2: Mix Ingredients
Use a hand mixer or whisk to blend until batter is smooth and creamy.
Step 3: Pour Brownie Batter into Baking Pan
Transfer the brownie batter into a 10" greased bread pan. Optional - top with chocolate chips!
Step 4: Bake Brownies
Bake the brownies at 350° for about 20-25 minutes. Then remove from the oven and let them cool for at least 1 hour before cutting to allow them to set completely.
Expert Tips
- To save time, use canned sweet potato puree.
- If you used baked or steamed sweet potato, make sure the potatoes have cooled to room temperature before adding into the brownie batter.
- For a smooth and creamy sweet potato texture, blend with a hand mixer before measuring.
- Bake in a 10" loaf pan to make 10 brownies. (This creates the ideal thickness too!)
- Use parchment paper and grease the baking pan with coconut oil to ensure they come out clean.

How to Cook Sweet Potato
Baking
I recommend making your sweet potatoes ahead of time, so they have plenty of time to cool. Place your sweet potatoes on a pan or parchment paper and bake at 375 degrees for about 40-50 minutes.
You’ll know they’re done when you can easily stick a fork in them. Baking is my favorite way to make them because it’s an easy way to meal prep extras for later! Plus, once they cool completely the outside peel will practically fall off the potato.
Steam/Boil
The second way you can make mashed sweet potato is by peeling the potatoes, chopping them into small chunks. Add them to a pot with water and simmer until they become fork tender.
It usually takes a little less time to cook, but I’m not a huge fan of peeling potatoes. For best results, you must peel the potatoes for this recipe.
How to store leftovers
To keep the sweet potato brownies fresh, I recommend storing them in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to 5 days.
