Why You'll Love This Recipe
This Dairy-Free Chocolate Avocado Smoothie is thick, creamy, and will definitely satisfy your chocolate cravings! All you need is a few simple ingredients and a scoop of your favorite protein powder!
As a busy mom, protein shakes have quickly become a go-to for me. They're easy, healthy, and only take about 5 minutes to make!
The key to a successful protein shake is making sure it has a balance of protein, healthy fats, and fiber. This combination will balance your blood sugar and keep you full for hours!
Not only is this a practical meal for on the go, but it also tastes like a delicious treat! I know it might seem odd to add avocado, but it's loaded with health benefits and makes a much thicker smoothie!
🍴Ingredient Notes
- Cold Filtered Water - For the liquid base, I used cold filtered water. I've found that because of the creaminess from banana and avocado, water works great and does not add unnecessary calories.
- Frozen Bananas - For natural sweetness I used frozen ripe bananas! This
- Vanilla Protein Powder - My favorite vanilla protein powders are Amy Meyers Paleo Vanilla Protein and Ancient Nutrition Vanilla Bone Broth Protein. You can also use chocolate protein powder.
- Ripe Avocado - Avocado is nutrient dense and it adds a delicious creamy texture to this smoothie.
- Cacao Powder - For a rich, dark chocolate flavor, I like adding in raw cacao powder! It's also loaded with vitamins and minerals like magnesium. Unsweetened cocoa powder will work too.
- Unsweetened Shredded Coconut - For healthy fats and a little sweetness, I love adding finely shredded coconut into my smoothies and shakes.
- Pumpkin Seeds - If you don't have pumpkin seeds, you can skip this ingredient, but it's a great way to add in more nutrients! You can also swap for chia seeds, flax seeds, or hemp seeds.

🍴Step by Step Instructions
Step 1: Add Ingredients into Blender
Start by adding all ingredients into a high speed blender.
Step 2: Blend Protein Shake
Cover securely and blend on high until smooth and creamy. Pour into a chilled glass cup and enjoy!
Expert Tips
- If you don't like thick smoothies, add a little extra water or dairy-free milk.
- The riper bananas you use, the sweeter the smoothie will be. If you use green bananas, you'll lower the sugar content and add more dietary fiber.
- Freeze leftover smoothie in silicone ice cube trays to use for later!
- Use a high-speed blender for this recipe. If you only have a food processor on hand, you can use that too!
- For best results, use a fresh avocado that is soft when you give it a gentle squeeze. If it's hard, it will not be ripe enough to use.
Serving Suggestions
- To elevate your protein shake, try adding a dollop of homemade coconut whipped cream! You can also sprinkle on some shaved chocolate.
- Sprinkle shredded coconut or granola on top.
- Before you pour the smoothie into a glass cup, drizzle melted dark chocolate around the inside! You can also add a chocolate drizzle to the top too!
I love that these glass cups that come with a lid and a straw!
How to store leftovers
Store leftovers in a glass cup with a lid like a mason jar in the refrigerator or freezer. (It will not stay as thick in the refrigerator.)
You can also make smoothie ice cubes by pouring leftovers into a silicone ice cube tray and freeze for later! (Or meal prep by doubling the recipe!)
Blend the frozen cubes with a non-dairy milk for a quick and easy smoothie.
