Why You'll Love This Recipe
Compared to traditional hot chocolate, this recipe is high in protein, low in sugar, and completely dairy-free. Plus, it's easy to make and there's no cooking required!
- Made with simple and healthy ingredients.
- There's about 20 grams of protein per serving.
- It's dairy-free & gluten-free.
- Takes less than 10 minutes to make.
- It's low in sugar.
- Made with only 4 ingredients!
- Easy to customize for dietary restrictions.
🍴Ingredient Notes
- Boiling Water - The water should be boiling so it's ready to serve immediately without needing to heat it up.
- Full Fat Coconut Milk - I love using full fat coconut milk because it's rich, creamy, and it's made with just coconut! You can also swap for any non-dairy milk like unsweetened almond milk, cashew milk, or oat milk.
- Chocolate Protein Powder - My favorite protein powder is Amy Meyers Double Chocolate Paleo Protein Powder. Any chocolate protein powder will work with this recipe.
- Cacao Powder - For a rich, dark chocolate flavor, I like adding in raw cacao powder! It's also loaded with vitamins and minerals like magnesium. Cocoa powder will work too.
How to Achieve the Perfect Temperature
When I use chilled milk with this recipe, it usually comes out the perfect temperature for drinking right away.
If you would like it to be a little hotter, you can either microwave the hot chocolate in a mug in the microwave or pour into a small pot on the stovetop and cook on medium heat until you reach your desired temperature.
Another option is to heat the milk before adding it into the blender.
🍴Step by Step Instructions
Step 1: Add Ingredients into Blender
Start by adding hot water, full fat coconut milk, cacao powder, and chocolate protein powder into a blender. Cover and blend on high for about 60 seconds.
Step 2: Blend & Pour
Pour into your favorite mug and enjoy hot!
Expert Tips
- For best results, use filtered water with this recipe. My favorite water filter is the Aquasana under counter water filter system.
- Store leftover full fat coconut milk in an airtight container in the refrigerator for coffee creamer. You can also freeze it in ice cube trays for smoothies!
- If you find it's not sweet enough, try blending in 1 medjool date or add in a tablespoon of your sweetener of choice. (Maple syrup, coconut sugar, or Lakanto Goldmen Monkfruit are all great options!)
- To get the perfect consistency, blend the hot chocolate on high for 30-45 seconds.
- A great way to add extra protein is by using a scoop of unflavored collagen protein. Ancient Nutrition Unflavored Multi-Collagen Protein is my favorite! There's about 10 grams of protein per scoop.
- Full fat coconut milk tends to separate in the can, so give it a good shake or stir well before pouring.
Serving Suggetions
Because this is a hot drink, I suggest serving it in a ceramic or glass mug.
Top with shaved dark chocolate, coconut whipped cream, or marshmallows!
You can also use a milk frother to add a layer of frothy milk on the top of your high protein drink!
How to store leftovers
If you make a double batch, you can store leftovers in a mason jar in the refrigerator for about 3-4 days. To freeze, I suggest pouring into an ice cube tray to add to a chocolate smoothie!
