Why I love this recipe
I've always been a big fan of Teriyaki Chicken, but the sauce never settled right with my stomach. After years of missing out on the delicious Teriyaki flavor, I recently discovered this healthier, no soy version from Primal Kitchen. You would never know it's made with simple, healthy ingredients!!
Whether you are soy-free or not, you're going to LOVE these Crispy Teriyaki Chicken Wings. They're marinated in the teriyaki sauce, rolled in a shredded coconut flour mixture, and AIR FRIED to perfection.
🍴Ingredient Notes
- Chicken Drumsticks - I haven't tested this recipe with regular wings, but I'm assuming it would work! For chicken, I love using the brand Bell + Evans because it's high quality. (Certified Organic, raised without antibiotics, and they're humanely raised.)
- Finely Shredded Coconut - I use the brand Terrasoul because they have a very light, finely shredded coconut that works great for baking recipes. Make sure to check the label before purchasing because they also have a "medium" shredded coconut that's a little thicker. I also use this coconut in my Crispy Sweet Potato Tots recipe!
- Cassava Flour - If you're not familiar with cassava flour, it's a great gluten-free flour alternative! It has a very light, powdery texture, and it’s made from Yuca. You can find it on amazon, or at most natural markets. (Whole Foods!) I use the brand Terrasoul Superfoods! They have a high quality organic Cassava Flour for a great price! (Plus free shipping with Amazon Prime!)
- Teriyaki Sauce - I used the brand Primal Kitchen (no soy) Teriyaki, but any Teriyaki sauce will work for this recipe.
What makes this recipe Paleo & Whole30 friendly?
This recipe is made without grains, gluten, or processed sugar. The flour mixture is a blend of Shredded Coconut, Sea Salt, and Cassava Flour (Yuca). The sauce is Whole30 approved, Paleo friendly, and sweetened with dates! Check out the ingredients below.
🍴Step by Step Instructions
- Start by adding your chicken to a large bowl. Pour *most* of your Teriyaki sauce on top - save some to drizzle on top later. Use tongs or a fork to move them around until they're evenly coated. Place in the refrigerator to marinate for 30-60 minutes. (You can also prepare this the night before.)
Marinating Tips
As mentioned above, you can certainly marinate them quickly while you prep the flour mixture, vegetables, and other side dishes. I usually pop mine in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes, but the longer they marinate the more flavorful they will be! You can even prep them the night before. Leave them in the large mixing bowl, and cover the top with plastic wrap. You can also put them in a glass container with an air tight lid.
Crispy Flour Coating
- Next, prep your flour mixture in a large bowl. Add cassava flour, shredded coconut, and salt. Use a fork to blend until fully combined.
- Remove your chicken from the refrigerator, and use tongs to roll your chicken in the flour mixture. Make sure to fully coat each piece of chicken, then add to your air fryer. Pour the leftover sauce from the bottom of the marinating bowl on the chicken, and the little bit of sauce you saved from earlier.
- Chicken Tip: I used 6 drumsticks for this recipe because that's how many fit on my air frying rack, but there is always a little flour leftover in the bowl. You could certainly do a few more! Or a mix of chicken wings + drumsticks.
Air Frying Chicken Wings
- Air fry at 390 degrees for 15 minutes. After 15 minutes, flip the chicken, and cook for an additional 10 minutes on the other side. If you're using an oven for this recipe, see below for directions.
- Remove from the air fryer and serve with vegetables & extra Teriyaki sauce! ENJOY!
Frequently Asked Questions
You do not need an air fryer for this Crispy Teriyaki Chicken Wing recipe, but I highly recommend it! An air fryer is great for cooking faster, keeping the meat juicy and tender while crisping the outside with minimal oil!
If you don't have an air fryer you can certainly try baking them in the oven but note that it might take a bit longer to get the edges crispy in the oven!
These wings are great on their own, but I always like to serve vegetables with my meals! Which usually includes air fried, roasted, or steamed vegetables. You can also serve the wings with some white rice or cauliflower rice to keep it Whole30/Paleo. (Jasmine rice is my favorite!)
Quick Crispy Vegetable Side Dish
- 4 Cups Chopped Broccoli
- 1 Large Sweet Onion Slices
- 1 Tablespoon Avocado Oil or Olive Oil
- ½ Teaspoon Salt
- ½ Teaspoon Cayenne Pepper
Instructions:
Add your vegetables into a large mixing bowl with oil and seasoning. Toss with a large spoon until they're fully coated. As you can see below, I cooked mine right in the air fryer with my chicken wings! If you don't have room in your air fryer, you can also roast them at 375 degrees for about 25-30 minutes.
How to store & reheat leftovers
If you have leftovers, they can easily be stored in an air tight container in the refrigerator. I have not tried freezing the wings, but I imagine they would freeze great! To re-heat you can microwave them, bake them for a few minutes, or pop them back in the air fryer for about 5 minutes! (My personal favorite option.)
Helpful Kitchen Tools
- Ninja Foodi Pressure Cooker - This is the appliance I used for this particular recipe. (I have the 8 quart.) As you can see in the pictures, it comes with a handy double metal rack so you can do two layers of wings or cook your vegetables at the same time! It can also pressure cook, saute, broil, dehydrate, and slow cook. One of my personal favorite appliances!!
- Ninja Kitchen Foodi Digital Air Fry Oven - If you can't tell, I'm a huge fan of Ninja's appliances! This would be another great option for air frying your wings!
- Non-Stick Baking Sheet - You a baking sheet if you're baking the wings, or if you're using the Ninja Air Fry Oven!
- Metal Tongs - Easily transfer your wings with tongs!
Air frying vs. Baking
Air frying is a newer way to cook, and honestly it's AMAZING. You can get the same results as traditional frying with very little to no oil! Plus I find you can cook your food so much faster vs. baking. It also comes out a lot crispier!

This recipe looks better than any teriyaki wings recipe that I have seen but I am not a fan of coconut. Is there another option that you would recommend? thanks!

Hmm, I have not tried it with anything else, but I bet a gluten-free breadcrumb would work! It doesn't have a very strong coconut flavor though! Let me know if you give it a try. (:
